Solway Special
The Solway estuary in south-west Scotland is a real treat in the heart of winter as it attracts large flocks of wintering birds including Barnacle Geese, Whooper Swans and possibly the largest gathering of roosting Starlings in the country. We’ll be based throughout the trip at WWT’s Caerlaverock Reserve which means we’ll be right on hand for the early morning arrivals and evening departures of the Geese and Swans – a fantastic sight and sound as well as photographic opportunity.
As well as maximising the opportunities on the reserve we will also venture further afield for a days photography with a local falconer (Peregrine, Merlin and Barn Owl should be amongst the birds we will work with in some excellent natural settings), to enjoy a couple of evenings photographing the drama of huge flocks of roosting Starlings and an excellent site for over-wintering Goosander to ensure a busy and varied winter break. Days are relatively short at this time of year here so evenings will be spent reviewing slideshows and critiquing any images you’d like to bring along and share.
