A one-day workshop photographing Red squirrels at an idyllic location in the Scottish Cairngorms, set within a pristine and ancient Caledonian pine forest. You will be based in a comfortable, professional hide with dedicated tuition on hand to help you make the most of this unique photographic location.
Surrounded by magnificent old pine trees and silver birch amongst a carpet of heather, this hide workshop takes places in prime Red squirrel habitat. The possibilities for a wide range of images with these entertaining mammals are endless; from close-up portraits, sitting on beautiful tree stumps, squirrel antics of running, jumping and chasing each other to behavioural shots. The opportunities are endless.
The workshops have been timed to make the most of two glorious Scottish seasons: the late summer when the carpet of purple heather looks stunning and the squirrels have a redder pelage, and the Autumn when the birch trees have turned golden brown and offer beautiful backgrounds of mellow fruitfulness.
This comfortable hide has been booked for our exclusive use from Neil McIntyre in conjunction with the Rothiemurchus Estate, and there is ample room for three guests plus your photographic guide. The hide has been thoughtfully positioned with a true professional’s photographic eye, making the most of light direction and backgrounds. There are viewing hatches on three sides of the hide which provide many different opportunities in this breathtaking forest location.
I will meet you at a pre-arranged location on the morning of the workshop, from where we will have a short 10 minute walk to the hide, and I will be with you for the full day as your guide, providing you with as much help as you need.
In terms of gear, I would recommended a telefoto lens in the range of 300mm-500mm, and a converter if you have one which provides additional flexibility. A mid-range zoom like a 70-200mm is also ideal for squirrel-in-habitat shots. There are bean bags in the hide and also sturdy plates which will take a gimbal or mono ballhead. The roomy hide will also accommodate your monopod or tripod, should you prefer this type of camera support.
There are many places to stay in Aviemore if you require an overnight’s stay; please just enquire after you have made your booking.
